“What really makes a human happy?”

Hosiery.

Lol!!

Oh man I’ve been having the worst dreams lately too, eclipse season?! I dreamed last night that a hydrogen bomb went off in my childhood town and I had to flee a giant fire monster that was burning everyone and everything in sight by hopping on a cargo ship to Singapore. (Do I have a hunch as to what this means? Yup.)

The other night, I dreamed Oprah Winfrey took off all her makeup and wig?! And we got to see her just as she is, with short curly died-pink gray hair?! And another dream with this flying spider/cat/fairy creature that was begging for me to take her everywhere but I locked her in a room whenever I went out to keep her safe. (Spoiler, she’s my inner child/artist, and she’d like to travel with me at all times, from the safety of my body thank you very much.)

Anyway, dreams!

Lots and lots of goodness in your post, if I commented on every part that tickled me, this comment would be way too long!

Oh! I’m also reading an Anne Lamott book (the diary about her newborn son) and I think I remember her describing love as “to be with?” Not to prove you wrong, but rather, to note that Anne, like all of us, may just constantly be in the process of trying to figure out how to describe love 🤷‍♀️

That birdsong fact doesn’t sound like pseudo science to me it sounds like science science. Truth! It makes me think, what else is like that in life? Subconsciously soothing for the nervous system? I want to know all the things that are behind-the-scenes making life calmer.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if only we all, always, identified primarily as mammals, climate crisis wouldn't be a thing. Equality for the species! Yes, please. That said, I appreciate your having taken care in making the cisgender white male distinction 🏳️‍⚧️. I loved your list of things that brought happiness. It was indeed a birdsong for this nervous system. I hope the Tony Danza misstep of posts gone by did not send you fact-checking. No need! Oh, and cleaning my kitchen windows this week brought me no end of joy, I'll own that one with pride.

My day job is in wild bird food, of all the random things, and I can confirm that the bit about birdsong is true. The actual science is definitely highly contextual and not as simple as clickbait-y “this one weird trick will cure your anxiety!!!!1!” nonsense but broadly, yes. Birdsong does have a demonstrable calming effect on the human nervous system, for some people. Whether it has anything to do with predators in the vicinity is beyond what I’ve seen in the data though, haha.

I’m trying so hard lately to figure out wtf my body actually wants to eat. I confess to a large degree of frustration with my inability to get an answer. My inner 3-year-old is def prepared to click that “Buy Fudge Now” button but that’s not the same thing as my body wanting it. 😂 It’s a very big fan of my morning AG1 smoothie but aside from that, nothing really seems to ring the body compass. So confusing.

I can get behind the idea of love as sacrifice only if the sacrifice is understood to be completely free of coercion. Then it becomes a profound act of power — but power under, rather than power over. An empowerment of the loved rather than a manipulative assertion of control over them.

I particularly applaud your bravery and adventurous spirit re: alcohol markers. 😆🥳
