Good morning beloveds. I’m writing this note from a hotel lobby. To be honest, whenever this happens, I feel like I’m living my destiny, lol. The hotel is grubby. Even the waffles have left their life. It has rained for days and days, but we have eaten corn chips on beds and played board games without losing friendship or teeth (due to losing attitudes).
Christmas feels like it was days ago. I just checked my calendar and see why: because it was! Time flies when you’re wearing wet jeans around vacation towns.
We kept it light this year. After years of long-distance travel and long-hour brain surgeries, we stayed home on The Day Of and did nothing but eat and/or tear into presents. I got many paper crafts that I cherish. My favorite was a card featuring a cardinal that someone gave me in early December that called me Mama Cardinal and said I was sooooooo cute (thank you for noticing!!). A few arts came home from school wrapped in brown paper towel. I was so excited to open these, genuinely, my tongue itched.
I noticed this Christmas that the most significant item in the room (other than a pair of winter boots that made me feel like a newborn calf - give her a piece of winter gear and she’s yours for life, friends!) came from a friend who made something I bought and gave to Tim. I know supporting small businesses is a real thing, but sometimes especially with kids it’s more convenient to get them garbage they want from big box stores. Yet the sweet weight in my heart I felt when Tim unwrapped this item - the meaning of it in the room - glowed in a way I could not deny. If I can, in the future, I’m going to do more shopping like this: thoughtful, maybe a little more expensive but also a lot less spastic, and hopefully even supportive of local artists. Fingers crossed!
I’m going to make the rest of this post for paid subscribers. I’m also thinking about structuring Under a Spell a little this year - posting on planned days for paid subscribers, posting once a month for everyone. I’ll let you know about that soon! Or maybe this is the announcement (lol).
If we’re saying bye for now, I hope the next few days contain moments of peace, beverages of choice, and as little or much Ryan Seacrest as your heart desires. XOXO
